What is your teaching philosophy?
Every student knows the answer behind, but I can help them turn the knob.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
We will go over the material you are currently learning, starting with the questions that are giving you trouble
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Practice makes perfect; once we do a problem together, do a similar problem by yourself using the same steps we did together.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Remind them that math is about understanding what the question is asking; once you know the first step, everything starts to click with repetition.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Every student is different, which means there is a different learning style that might suit you better, which I can help you with.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Break up the question, and separate the problem into what you do understand and what you do not understand. Then, break up what you do not understand into smaller parts to reach the solution.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Visualization. I myself am a visual learner. Once I can see it be drawn in front of me, it is easier for me to understand it. I would apply the same idea with students.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Start with simple problems - problems that students can easily understand that serve to help their self-esteem and prepare them for more difficult problems.
