What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe every student deserves a chance to grow and educate themselves. They need to be acknowledged, listened to, motivated, and constantly praised for each goal and lesson achieved.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would first ask if they have ever been taught the material. If they have, I would ask for their input and feedback. I'll present an idea and build a conversation around the thought and how to get there.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
By praising him/her. By correcting any small mistake if present. I would ask them about their interests and wrap it around to a majority of the lessons. I would also ask them to talk to me and to teach me what they like and are good at.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
By constant recognition, praising, small encouraging notes on a sticky and send a letter or email to the parents/guardian on biweekly progress.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would break down the skill to smaller elements. I would get rid of what is not needed and I would magnify their strengths into any of the broken elements to connect the concept into one big idea.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I would read with them. I would also listen to the audiobook version with them. I would keep a small notebook of vocabulary that might be new to them. After every 3 or 4 paragraphs I would ask small reading check questions.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Getting to know you questions. Icebreakers. Giving background information about myself to them. Discussing hobbies, movies, shows, video games, graphic novels, sports.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I would ask them for their fears first. Has any teacher bullied them or talked negative about them. I would clear their mind of that. I would start fresh and praise them for every new goal they achieve.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I would ask them small review questions. I would ask them to teach me the material. I would ask them for any connections that they see.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
回顾过去的材料。工作在一个with new concepts. Apply small amounts of medium to hard problems. I would also ask them to create a quiz for me.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
By homework, thinking skills, vocally, speaking it through, practice problems, small quizzes.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I adapt my teaching by their strengths and weaknesses. I ask them to discuss everything with me, so I can be reassured of what their needs are.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Notebooks, dittos, online textbooks, videos, and anything the student may have with them from their school.
