Tutoring review by Kylie in Smithtown, NY
On Sunday, the student and I began our lesson by reviewing his homework. The student used the strategies we discussed in our previous session to read a short passage and answer four questions. With the help of that strategy, the student was able to answer all but one question. We worked together to answer the last question, and talked about why he had difficulty with it. Next, we finished up our discussion of passage reading strategies by tackling two sets of paired passages. I taught the student to "divide and conquer" the paired passages. After the paired passages, the student and I worked on sentence completions.

今天我们从第四章湾工作问题red cycloalkanes. We reinforced the concepts concerning steric strains, cis and trans isomers, and ring flips. The student is a fast learner and I can tell he is working hard to do well in this course.

Tutoring review by Jennifer in Smithtown, NY
Student started telling me about a trip, so I had him draw and then write the word "slide" (to contrast with yesterday's word, "slip," e.g. long vowel short vowel). Reviewed lists of words with "long I" sounds. Watched difference between upper and lower case while writing them. There were some backwards lower case "e"s, so we did the E workbook page. We read a story called Ocean Life, practicing comprehension and isolating the following words --"ocean," "whale," "shark" -- which I then assigned, along with the rest of the homework, for further practice.

The student and I worked on the mathematics section of the SATs. We went over three practice sections and the last two were timed. We developed some test taking strategies around how to time each problem. I also gave the student a quick recap of graph transformations regarding parabolas.

Tutoring review by Kathryn in Smithtown, NY
This was my first session back with the student. We started the lesson by going over the two pieces she wrote in response to the articles I left with her. We talked about how she has risen to a higher level of writing, so naturally she will start to make more mistakes, since her writing itself is more complex. She then expressed to me a desire to write up a piece about her conference in a journalistic style. I gave her a brief overview of how a news article is written using an inverted pyramid, starting with a strong lead and nut graph and adding more details and specifics as the piece goes on. She is going to prepare a piece like this for our next session.
