My Path to Success by Sarah - October 2022 Scholarship Essay

Education is the foundation for the decisions I have made and will continue to make. As an aspiring pre-med student, education is extremely important because in regard to patients we must practice at the same level based on our scope of knowledge.

I chose to attend Early College High School (ECHS) for my education. All of my friends were going to a “normal” high school. I cling to the familiarity of people I have always known and was scared of being somewhere new where I would not know anyone. ECHS was different from other schools; it was built on an elementary school, so it was smaller. There weren't any sports and they had limited clubs.

However, there were college courses and prep classes that would help me improve all aspects of my education. It would ease my anxieties about schooling. I would have hands on help rather than being a number at a huge high school. In the course of four years at ECHS, I have accumulated sixty units and am on track to receive my Associates in Science and Mathematics.

During my time at ECHS, I took two college classes during summer after a year of exhausting classes. I did the work for the class whilst jetlagged and visiting family. I would do my assignments from 12AM to 7AM because the WiFi would be unstable during the day. I found it hard to concentrate on my work when the heat was insane. Yet, I overcame my struggles and received a passing grade in both classes.

I have also had the opportunity to take an emergency medical responder (EMR) class, a prerequisite to emergency medical technician (EMT). I am currently taking EMT and have gone on an eleven-hour ride along with the EMTs; in which we cared for and transported patients, organized equipment, and recorded important information. It was an experience I will never forget.

I am always looking for opportunities in which I can expand my education and grateful for the decisions I have made. In the past, I have taken an Allied Health course, been involved in CampMed, and interviewed medical professionals. I am excited for the next educational chapter in my life.
