My Most Influental Teacher by Peyton - June 2021 Scholarship Essay

Throughout my school career, I've had dozens of influential teachers who have helped me with my academic and personal journey. There have been teachers who have been there for me when i needed it most and teachers I would consider peers. Though, out of all of these teachers, none have been more influential on me as a person as my primary school art teacher Ms. Susan Sekella.

I am an artist. It's always been drawing and creating things ever since I was a child. Nobody fostered this creativity quite like she did. She was the one who saw the potential I had, and would constantly push me to do more and teach me about artistic career paths that I could take. I would excitedly come in and show her my drawings which would always be met with, "You should make a book out of these characters," or "You could make a cartoon one day." Even when I moved on to the middle and high schools, she would push for my works to be showed off in the art show. Any years where my current art teacher didn't have anything they liked, Ms. Sekella would come to me and ask for personal works of mine that she could display.

Even now, I still go back to her for artistic advice. She is more than happy to help me with my art and my future career path. She told me about local artistic opportunities, given me the chance to paint pieces for the primary school, and has told me about which art colleges I should look into. If it wasn't for her constant support, I wouldn't be on the career path that I am now. I would've viewed my love of art as a hobby and not as my future career.
