Most Influential Teacher by Emily - June 2021 Scholarship Essay

当你年轻的时候,每个人都问你你想要的to be when you grow up. For me it was always a career related to health care such as, a vet, doctor, dentist or maybe a physical therapist. As I grew older this question was harder to answer, all I knew is it would be something related to health care. As a freshman in high school in a border town I was given the opportunity to choose a pathway, I knew it would be the health carriers CTE career pathway. Freshman year principles of health science I developed a stronger passion for the medical field. My love for this field started here but it really flourished my sophomore year Med Term class where I had the honor of being taught under Velma Perez RN.
After only a few days of class I knew Mrs. Perez was not like any other teacher I had ever had. She taught from her heart. She taught us about her real-life experience from being a registered nurse. Many students say that teachers just make them write notes and have tests, but Mrs. Perez was different. She taught in a way that made me excited to learn. She made sure we did not just write notes but learn and would show us real world examples and scenarios. She explained in a way I could understand. At the time I remember thinking I would not want to be a nurse. I knew for sure that my heart belonged to learning about medicine. I was taught so much during this year, I learned about things that I did not even know existed. I was so fascinated about everything she had to say and teach. I was always so eager to go to her class. My Junior year I started my Anatomy and Health Science Theory class. Yes, I loved learning about these subjects, but that teachers did not teach the way Mrs. Perez taught. Even though I was not her student she would still ask how I was doing, and how the classes were going. She encouraged me in everything I did. She always told me I was a good student. She encouraged me to apply for the Perry Initiative outreach Program and I was chosen. The program was held at the UT Health Science Center. This program is strictly offered to young woman in high school. At this conference we were able to complete six hands on mock surgeries and learned directly from various woman medical professionals and engineers. As a student this meant a lot, knowing someone was looking out for me and wanted the best for me. I’m currently a senior taking the medical assistant class and reunited with the teacher who grew my love for medicine. It was the beginning of this school year in my medical assistant class that I realized what I wanted to do. I wanted to pursue a degree in nursing. I will be attending San Angelo University.
Looking back, I have realized Mrs. Perez was a great influence in this decision. She taught me so much throughout my high school years. She is a great nurse, a great teacher and a great person. She has taught me about professionalism, strong work ethic, and how to communicate with my patients. Mrs. Perez is the person who has guided and encouraged me. I am extremely grateful, and I will continue to thank her for helping me find my way in life. She truly made an impact on my life for the better.
