My reasons for majoring in Psychology by Brittany - February 2013 Scholarship Essay

I am a completely open-minded individual wanting to get a degree in the field of Psychology for countless reasons. Not only would psychology better help me understanding the aspects of life, but it will also make me able to positively affect the people in my home community and the people in my college community. I want to take what I will learn and engrave it into mind’s which may not be fortunate enough to pay for an education as fortunate as mine. I don’t want children without parents to feel unloved. I don’t want abusive alcoholic parents believing their addiction is stronger than their love. I don’t want a teenager girl being the only guardian her younger brother has. I don’t want a growing man sentenced to a shorter life than he deserves because his disgusting addictions have taken over his own will power. I wan’t people to be able to come to me with a frown, and undoubtedly leave with a smile. Going to a university which offers me the opportunity to create my career, is not only going to help me support my family in the future but it will also help the future generations who are being raised. I will do anything in my power to help my community, and make us live in a better environment. A world where we can leave the house not worried of being judged. A world where everyone has the option of getting an education, whether it’s from their own experiences, or me relaying my understanding. Applying for scholarships to me is difficult. I never seem to think that my essay will stand out to someone, but I think if someone opens their mind while reading this and understands that I truthfully deserve and extremely depend on others to help me through my college process they wouldn’t think twice. Being asked what would make me different from any other candidate wanting to receive this scholarship is a difficult question. A lot makes me different then every one else who surrounds me, but it seems like a cliche type of question, which basically asks for a sympathetic response. I don't want people to feel sorry and then accept me and help me. I wan't people to know not that I was unfortunate and I deserve it, but rather I was fortunate enough to deserve it. We live in a country which is highly supportive of not only ourselves domestically, but to our entire world. We all depend on each other for a helping hand. I know that I have helped so many people throughout my country by simple acts that most others seem to resist. I have given blood in hope that it helps a dying child. I have been apart of clubs that are striving to make a difference. I have been stricken with insane sadness from issues that may not even personally affect me, but that touch my heart in more than one way. Being selfish I believe is the worst trait or word a person could ever be called. Helping is what everyone lives for. That is why we learn, to help people know more. Thats why we create a family, to help raise a child. Thats why we make differences, to help others understand they are very fortunate while others may not be. I believe that I have helped not only my community, but my world as a whole to such a high extent that I also deserve help back. This is only the beginning. A beginning where I learn to extend my arm, in hope that others will also. College is my starting line.
