Horace Mann got me into college. by Adrian - October 2022 Scholarship Essay

Horace Mann once said, "Education is an organic necessity of a human being." Before Horace Mann advocated for free public education, obtaining an education was considered a luxury. Fast forward 200 years later, acquiring schooling has allowed many individuals to undergo socioeconomic upwards mobility. So what does education mean to me? Education means to me that the low-income Hispanic with uneducated parents has a chance at the American Dream. Education is the path to becoming successful and developing generational wealth.
From a young age, my parents instilled the importance of education. Therefore, growing up, I did everything to fulfill my parent's dream of getting an education. Eventually, my dedication paid off as I became the first individual in my family to obtain a college education. Statistically, all odds were against me, and something as graduating high school was a difficult task in itself, but for my schooling, I am living proof of socioeconomic upwards mobility.
Moreover, education has allowed me to get on track with becoming a successful individual that will pass along generational wealth. Statistically, individuals with higher education earn more. Therefore, the purpose of my schooling will allow me to become a high earner, and with my income, I plan to set up my future generations for success.
In conclusion, education is a crucial tool for success. Thanks to my education, I have beat statistics and set paths for generations behind me to follow. I also want to give a big thanks to Horace Mann for advocating for education for all at no cost.
