I am a current undergraduate student at Athabasca University studying sociology and psychology, though I also have prior post-secondary experience in the English Literature department. As a member of several marginalized communities, I have a very strong understanding of some of the barriers members of these communities face, and wish to become an active force in bridging those barriers. I am Indigenous, a part of the 2SLGBTQ+ community, and am disabled (as well as deaf- though I have access to many communication tools so that communication is not an issue.) I am also dyslexic and have ADHD and so I am fully aware of the hurdles that often come with more traditional education systems. I have worked on several methods to help me succeed, which I feel could be a benefit for students who have learning difficulties, as well as for students who do not - since my experiences provide another point of view that many others do not have. I am a firm proponent of education, and as I mentioned, I strive to be a bridge to access. I also firmly believe that each student can, and will, thrive if given the tools and environment for them to do so. I also firmly believe that each student deserves the space to explore what fits best for them, and I strive to provide that space by simply listening, observing, and meeting students where they are, individually. Outside of education and in my free time, I enjoy spending time in nature, with my pets, with my friends and family, creating (whether through art, poetry, other forms of writing, or music,) video games, and trying new things. Finally, I find it exceptionally important as an educator to constantly and consistently be seeking out further knowledge and expanding my knowledge on issues which impact marginalized communities of which I am not a member, so I am always on the pursuit of that.
