My Teaching Statement
I am a Math teacher, graduate of the University of Burundi in Burundi, where I received a bachelor degree, and the University of Yaound I in Cameroon where I received a master degree. I upgraded my studies at the University of Calgary in Alberta toward my teaching certification in 2006. I taught Math and Physics in Burundi and Cameroon before I settled in Calgary where I'm teaching now.
I did a lot of tutoring and substituting before I got my full time job. I'm still tutoring students from my classes twice a week after school on a voluntary basis.
I enjoy teaching, helping students to achieve both academically and socially. I am also a soccer and basketball coach. What I always tell my team players also prevail to students in class or in one-on-one tutoring. You can't play well, you can't shot a ball (in Basketball) when you are frustrated. Frustration in one of the barrier to learning. I always create a fun and relaxed environment for my students. I mostly act as a coach than a traditional teacher.
首先,我了解我的学生kinds of knowledge, experience and struggles they have, and what they want to achieve so that I help them to succeed. I most of time use case based teaching and other active learning activities because I believe students learn better by doing. Creative activities stimulate the brain, promote collaboration in a group setting, foster problem solving, and prepare for life-long collaborative practice. I am always searching, studying to find and improve my teaching strategies.
