I graduated from Texas Tech in December 2017 with an MA in Technical Communication, which is basically business and professional writing. I studied creative writing/literature in undergrad, and in grad school, I studied how writing applies in industry and the workplace.
I get it--writing is hard. I run my own technical writing/editing business, and I still think writing is hard. It's scary too, especially when your document is a high-stakes, graded assignment. While teaching at TTU, I helped several of my students overcome anxiety and panic attacks about writing, and some of these students wrote the best essays I've read.
Let's talk grammar. For most people, it's the boogey man in the basement. It was for me too. I didn't even know the parts of speech until my first senior year in college (I had been an English major for two years already). I teach grammar using a sentence strategy approach that uses basic sentence structures and strategies so that you'll always know that your grammar is correct. I also give handouts so you can reference it later--professional writers look stuff up all the time too.
I've worked with a diverse bunch of students, many of whom were international students from all over the world. Everyone is different, and everyone learns differently. As someone who has Attention Deficit Disorder, I know what it's like to struggle to learn in ways that your brain just isn't good at. I work with each person to find out what learning strategies do, and don't, work for them, even if they don't know for sure themselves.
I'd love to chat if you have an upcoming assignment, need to improve your writing skills, or need some advice and editing help with financial aid, college/grad school admission essays, or job applications.
