Certified Tutor

I am an undergraduate student at the University of Kansas, where I am pursuing a BS in Economics with a minor in Mathematics.

For most of my schooling career before college, I adamantly disliked learning. To me, everything taught had no meaning or applicability to the real world. As a result, I struggled in school and while my instructors were concerned, none truly adapted to fit my learning style. When I got to college, I took my first calculus class, where my professor engaged me with the material and encouraged students to think critically about not just calculus, but math as a field of study.

I started questioning the world around me, and slowly began to piece together the relevance of the knowledge I had accumulated over the past 12 years. These lessons made me realize this: people are not born with knowledge, they work hard for it. While every field of study is not everyone's "cup of tea," it's important to understand its value in a larger framework. My job is to facilitate this process, as well as to cultivate the skill and enthusiasm to make you a lifelong learner.

To achieve this, I make the content engaging for students in a pleasant atmosphere. My lesson plans are centered around the student's learning style. Usually, this means introducing broad topics and where they fit in the academic map, and then narrowing in on specific ideas and working out problems. I am a strong believer in learning through pattern repetition and recognition, so I integrate sample problems for the student and myself to practice throughout the lesson to ensure the benchmarks of understanding are met. When necessary, this is adjusted for students' individual needs to optimize the learning process.

I am currently a teaching assistant for the Kansas Algebra Program. I teach precalculus/trigonometry and college algebra; I will be well suited to tutor these subjects as my current lesson plans and learning strategies are proven to be effective. The structure of the courses I teach allows me to give individual attention to each of my students, and I look forward to adapting these methods to help students learn in more personalized settings. While my current teaching experiences focus on algebra and precalculus, my skill set merits tutoring the calculus sequence as well.

As an International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma recipient, I understand what it means to have writing-centered coursework. When I was a senior in high school, I authored my Extended Essay, which explored the evolution of traditional Indian dance forms from pre to post-colonialism through the lens of perceptions of femininity. This was my first exposure to the world of academic writing; however, I have experience in literature, as evidenced in my coursework in Higher Level World and American Literature in the IB program. In regards to public speaking, I spent my high school career as a member of our Speech and Debate Team and was recognized as one of the top speakers in the state. I've carried on this dedication to public speaking in my work for University Governance, where I chair the Student Retention Board at the University of Kansas.

My goal is to unlock your academic potential through conceptual understanding, repetition, and emphasis on the applicability of content. In doing so, I want us to learn from each other and am open to using any resources you or your academic advisors suggest to me. I'm just a click away and respond as fast as possible.
