What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe that all students are capable of learning.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would introduce myself. I would then give them the opportunity to introduce themselves.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Encourage them to work on their own outside of tutoring opportunities, and not just rely on the tutoring time to improve in their subject.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Help them see where they are succeeding.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would take the time to reteach the concept, changing the approach as needed.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I read the passage with them and discuss with them what they understood.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Get to know them first.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I show my excitement for the subject.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I have the students explain what they have learned to me.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
I help them see where they are understanding and succeeding, and I help them where they are struggling.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
Pay attention to where they are struggling. Ask them where they need help.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
If there is a specific learning style the student portrays, I will adapt the lesson to accommodate that.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
I love to use PowerPoints, if that is something that works with the student.
