Tyler

Certified Tutor

I believe the acquisition of knowledge comes with a responsibility to share with others.I enjoy tutoring Chemistry, Biology, and math, though I prefer biological sciences as my field is microbiology. I typically work with high school and college students but have some experience with younger students. For those that wish to improve and understand concepts better, I will gladly use creative problem solving to find a way to relate a concept in terms the student will grasp. I have completed research projects involving wildlife and antibiotic resistance and even giving concrete the properties of steel. I served as a peer mentor to the LSU College of Science freshmen and led weekly seminars on study skills, time management, scheduling, and preparing and presenting multimedia projects.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I rely heavily on Bloom's Taxonomy. Use of this tool all but guarantees success.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

在第一个会话中,我喜欢有一点of time to familiarize ourselves. I also like to get insight on what topics the student is struggling with, what the student's goals are, and what approach we need to take to get there.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I believe recognition goes a long way.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I will break it down and put it into words the student understands. If any background information is relevant, I will review the student on such. I will ask the student to show various degrees of comprehension of the material in hopes to relate the scenario and solution to similar ones the student may encounter in the future.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

The only class I didn't like in school was one I didn't understand how to approach. After learning how to take that class with a different approach, I actually become engaged. If you understand why you are learning something, it makes it a little easier. If you know what you are talking about, it makes you confident.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

The student and I will assess needs in the first session; of course, if something else pops along the way, we can tackle that as well. We will discuss what the student hopes to accomplish and the best way to get there. Everyone learns in their own way, and it is my job to help you find your way.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I typically use a small dry erase marker board and markers, calculators, databases, and visual aids.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By sharing studying techniques that have proven successful for me, I intend to expand the student's perspective on subject matter. I encourage questioning how each concept relates to previous concepts, and link them together to ensure a solid foundation.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I will show the student how to approach the material a little differently to help enhance comprehension.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Communication is essential to ensure both parties are prepared and can make the most out of the session.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would try to relate subject matter to something that the student is interested in.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Using Bloom's Taxonomy. I like students to demonstrate each step of the process to ensure content mastery.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I bring material to their level, and do my best to make sure they understand. However, if they are not honest with me, I cannot help them. I have to have feedback from the student to know if I am effective to their needs, and I adjust my approach as necessary.
