What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that all children have the ability and right to learn. My goal is to instill a love of learning in all children. I would like all children to have the confidence to overcome any difficulties they may have in learning.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would like to get to know the child. What is the child's interests inside and outside of the classroom? I would also try to find out what their learning styles are. I would also like to find out what they think they struggle with in school.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would help a student stay motivated by positive reinforcement. Also, when a child meets with success, they tend to stay motivated, so I would make sure the child met with success in every lesson.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would try to teach the skill in a different way. We would continue to practice it until the child understood it. I would also ask the child what they felt was the most difficult part of the concept or skill in order to better help them understand.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would start by giving them things to read that they are able to easily read. This would boost their confidence. Then, I would gradually work their way up to more difficult texts. I would also expand their vocabulary.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

The most successful strategies are to find out what interests the child and try to gear their learning activities towards what they are interested in.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would try to find out what the most difficult things for them are in that subject. I would try playing games and other fun activities to get them interested.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would use questioning techniques. I would use some writing and games.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I would start by giving them work that I knew they could do and gradually introduce things that are more difficult.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I would evaluate a student's needs by questioning and writing. I would see if I could contact their school to find out more information. I would talk to the student and their parents.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

All my teaching is based upon what the student's needs are, whether they are emotional or academic.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Technology, games, and manipulatives.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

If I give the student the confidence they need to succeed, they will become an independent learner.
