I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

My name is Uzair, I graduated from The City College of New York with honors in Biochemistry. I have been tutoring for over 2 years in biochemistry/chemistry/biology/STEM both for a chemical society and as a recitation leader, thus I have a great understanding of the nuances of learning biochemistry/chemistry/biology. During these two year I did both one on one tutoring and group sessions, In both I used question from textbooks to help students learn concepts. I would go through a question step by step, but also addressing multiple other ways to answer questions. I really do believe that any student can learn biochemistry/chemistry/biology /STEM if their hearts in it. I can help reach your full potential with work hard and great study skills. I primarily tutor college kids in science (physics and chemistry), but I have also tutored high school level math and science for a non-profit in the NYC, so I have worked with all ages and all skill levels. More specifically these high school kids often come from school that do not have adequate resources to help these kids become successful in STEM courses. Thus, I have to become clever in the way I relay topics to them.

When teaching, my focus will be on relaying the concept the student in a very simplistic manner and then increase their understanding with detail on that particular concept. Also if possible I'll give practice problems for them to do as homework and then go over the difficult ones during the lesson. I believe if you can do the hard stuff the easy/medium difficulty questions are a breeze. We all know and science require practice and patience and hopefully I can do that with you or your child.

FLEXIBLE HOURS
I have availability both weekends and evenings during the week. I am happy to work with you or your student to find a time that works best.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I'm a firm believer that seeing what you are learning being applied in the real world really solidifies people's confidence. Also I love to have to do the same problems with different items removed or added, showing that they can attack a problem from multiple different points.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I do it in two ways: one by straight asking them, and two by looking at what they keep on getting wrong during our sessions.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I like to get a feel of the student's needs and the timeframe within which they want to accomplish their needs. After this maybe start to do some basic problems that I use to gauge what they know and don't know. Most importantly, if they are attacking problems in an inefficient or incorrect manner.
