What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is that each child requires a different style of teaching depending upon how they learn. That being said, my teaching style must be adjusted according to each student.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

It definitely depends on what subject I would be tutoring to the student. The subject changes everything. As a general response, I would ask the student to explain why he/she feels the need for tutoring. The first session is all about understanding the student and why tutoring is necessary - it is not about rushing into it. The more I understand my student, their learning process and what may be tripping them up, the better tutor I can be.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Sometimes, students get tripped up on the learning process. Each student learns in a different way, which is why teaching needs to be catered to the student. Learning how the student learns is crucial to helping them understand themselves and why they are getting tripped up. Once they understand what they are missing and why, they can work on their weak points themselves.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Being enthusiastic and showing a student that you really care helps motivation so much. Being prepared, being punctual and reliable are the three number one things to creating a beneficial tutor-student relationship. Slipping in different activities and games in the beginning of a lesson also may grab the student's attention.
