What is your teaching philosophy?

I meet the student where they are at to get an understanding of why they are having difficulties in the subject matter.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I get to know the student by asking lots of questions and listening very carefully.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I give the student tools and resources to discover on their own. I also find out what interests the student and connect the content somehow to that.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Determine what motivates the student in general, and then help them make connections. I also create opportunities for small short term successes.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Approach the material in different ways, and find ways to make it applicable and relevant to the student.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

There are various tools out there such as video and books on tape where students read along with the audio. It really depends greatly on the grade level of the student and various other factors, such as a learning disability or inability to focus.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I help the student get in a relaxed state by alleviating any anxiety the student may have. I also come to understand the student's perspective.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I make a connection to something the student is interested in or passionate about.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I use observation. I check for understanding through questioning, and ask the student to apply the knowledge practically with a scenario based approach.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I give them simple tasks that allow quick and small successes initially. With those successes interest and motivation increase along with confidence.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I gather as much information as possible. I begin with lots of questions regarding how the student came to need tutoring. I also look at previous work the student has completed in the subject matter. In addition, I get the student's point of view of why they are struggling.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I address the particular learning style of the student, change activities or tasks, choose different deliverables, and allow the student to choose from options regarding the approach to the lessons. In other words, ask the student to be engaged in the learning process.

你通常使用什么类型的材料一定g a tutoring session?

I use video, audio, worksheets, posters, articles and whatever else the student responds to.
