Certified Tutor

I have lived in Lakewood since 2003. I graduated from Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama with my Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and Early Childhood Education.

I taught first grade for four years in a traditional school setting. Currently, I teach first grade at an online school. I taught a fourth/fifth-grade class for a year. I have been in a variety of preschool settings over the years. I love working with students and seeing them excited when they understand a concept and have that "light bulb" moment!

I homeschooled my twin sons for their sixth, seventh, and eighth-grade years.

I love watching my sons play soccer. I love SEC football since I am from the South!! I am a big Sounders and Seahawks fan! I love spending time with my family!

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe every student can succeed. It may take a student a little longer or they may need a little help along the way. I want to help tap in and find what makes the student do and be their best.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

在第一次会议,我想了解我student and let them get to know me. I would like to gather information regarding what we need to focus on during our next time together.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I would help a student become an independent learner by working through hard concepts, giving examples, and having them explain back to me. I would like to give them the confidence to go and try more on their own.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would help a student stay motivated by encouraging them. I would give them ways to feel successful.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, I would find different ways to show the skill. I would have them explain to me what they understand, so that we could see where the problem lies.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would have the student read the piece first. I would then read it to the student, so he/she could listen to it as well. I would then have the student read it to me. We would then talk about it. We would discuss any words he/she did not understand.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I have found being positive and encouraging is a way to be successful. I also think finding the best way a student learns and trying to approach teaching in that way.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would try and break our sessions into a work time, and then a little play time with a game that would cover the content.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would have the student repeat back or put in his/her words what we were discussing.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I would build confidence in finding ways for the student to feel successful. This might be making small benchmarks and making sure the student can reach that mark.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I would use a variety of tools and assessments to find out where the student is in that subject.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I would evaluate how the session went and how well the student did. If something went well, keep using it. If something did not go well, figure out why. Maybe it was not a fit for the student's learning style. I would then find a way to present material in the learning style that works best.

什么类型的米aterials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I would typically use manipulatives for math for younger students. I would us games or interactive pieces for older students. I would use some worksheets. I would use a white erase board.
