I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Casey

Certified Tutor

I am an undergraduate student at New York University, with a major in Psychology but plenty of varied interests. I plan to pursue a double-major as well in an undecided area. I offer test preparation for Regents, SHSAT, ACT, and AP Exams. Moreover, I offer tutoring services in psychology, math, English/social studies, essay editing, general homework support, and assistance with college application essays. I enjoy tutoring all of my subjects, but my favorite would have to be psychology, as it is my major and I am personally interested in it. I have been tutoring for the past three years and have found it extremely rewarding for both my students and myself. I am passionate about helping students because for me, there is nothing better than being interested in learning. To be able to encourage another person's education experience is an amazing thing, and the happiness a student feels when he or she has their "lightbulb moment" is profound.
My teaching style is heavily personalized. It is important to establish the student's individual, unique learning style and cater the tutoring experience to his or her needs. Tutoring is a team effort, and my students and I work together to produce results and reach established goals. Outside of academia, I am a writer. I also enjoy spin class, exploring New York, and spending time with my friends.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Figure out the student's level of comprehension. What does he or she know so far? It is also important to set realistic goals and expectations that we can achieve in a reasonable amount of time, so the student can see his or her progress.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Figure out his or her learning style. Visual learners need to employ different tactics than audio learners, etc. The most important tool for any student to succeed is confidence!

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Underline, underline, underline! Taking a challenging passage one sentence at a time may seem daunting, but it's the easiest way to break down a paragraph for reading comprehension. It's important that the student read the questions first, so that he or she knows what to look for when reading.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Some form of practice exam (in the instance of test preparation) if applicable, or sample questions. I also like to bring in a variety of different resources on the topic of today's lesson focus that approach the concepts in a variety of different ways.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Patience is key! As a tutor, it's my job to help you, and if I can't do that it reflects poorly on me, not the student. The most important thing, for me, is to believe in my student's abilities and encourage their confidence in themselves.
