I believe that everyone should have the opportunity to be successful in their educational career and want to do my part in providing support for that success. As a tutor I would attempt to tailor the lessons to the specific needs and learning styles of the student, and teach in a way that makes the material memorable and interesting. I graduated from Colorado School of Mines in December of 2015 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biochemistry, and am planning on pursuing a Masters Degree in Microbiology. My passion in education is for science, but I have been well prepared in the areas of mathematics and reading as well. I hope to pass my passion for education, along with an understanding of the course material and study habits, on to future students.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would discuss the subject/subjects in which they require assistance and determine what specifically they need. I would also attempt to determine what their learning style is so I can prepare materials accordingly.
What is your teaching philosophy?
To tailor teaching to the individual needs of every student and to make the material interesting.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I can teach them study, reading and independent research skills that they can continue to use without my help.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
By using strategically placed breaks and a reward system that is dependent on their progression through the material.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Approach the concept in a new way and with new teaching aids such as videos, different literature sources, etc.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I would have them define any terms they don't understand separately then substitute a definition they understand into the sentence to read.
