Certified Tutor

I'm an undergraduate studying Electrical Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines! Studying to become an engineer, I've had to take countless courses that had to do with math. Naturally, it has become a subject that I am fairly familiar with! From the type of math questions you'll see on the ACT to the lengthy word problems you'll see in class, I'm sure I can help you out!

As a new tutor, I am looking forward to tutoring Algebra the most. In the realm of math, I find that I am the most comfortable with this subject and that my expertise can come in handy to others. I strive to be a tutor who is comfortable with different learning paces and techniques. I want to adapt to my students to provide the best learning experience for both parties.

Outside of school, I enjoy outdoor activities such as snowboarding, hiking, and playing football. I also enjoy movies and playing video games.

What is your teaching philosophy?

No matter our age or experience, we can always learn something. Being able to learn is the same as being given an opportunity to improve. So let's improve!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would first start by asking them how comfortable they are with the subject and if they have any problems/where their problem lies. Then, I would give the student a sample problem. I'd watch them solve the problem to see if I can spot the issue. Then I would go from there.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I would let them work through the problem themselves. When they get stuck I would ask them questions instead of just simply giving them the answers. I would try to explain why the solution works instead of saying "it works because it works." Understanding the process and why the solution works is very important.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would get to know the student and find out what their passion is and what they want to be when they grow up. I would try to relate the subject at hand with something they care about so that they can connect with the subject. This way, they are motivated to do well with something they care about and can relate to.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would try a different approach. I would need to explain it in a way that they can understand so I need to use something from their own personal experience so that they can relate to it. If they can relate to it, there's a better chance of them understanding it.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would help them by dissecting the sentence, paragraph, or question that their having problems with. I would say, "I look at this and it tells me this...” and work through it with them.
