我的教学理念是找到适合each student, as every problem has multiple entry points and there is strategy or mnemonic for every one.

In a first session, it is important to establish how the student likes to learn and what strengths we can utilize for that subject.

The best way is to give strategies, examples and mnemonics.

I would build up to what a student knows, so they can use what knowledge they already have to assist them in learning a concept or skill. One thing that helps is breaking things down into steps so the student can feel motivated by each part they learn.

I would find out what is troubling them and start back at what they do know, and go from there. It is all about empowering a student and getting them to access the material at the level of understanding they are currently at.

I help students with reading comprehension by using context clues, word roots, prefixes and suffixes.

What helps most is finding what strengths they have and what strategies that they are already using, so we can strengthen those strategies and leverage their strengths. A second strategy that is highly effective is finding more about them so we can incorporate those interests as much as possible.

I would connect it to their current interests or career goals. The best way to help a student is to get them to realize a functional use for their knowledge.

I would make sure that they are able to synthesize an example or an alternate possibility, especially in the cases of Math, Science, and Literature.

You allow them to first do problems or process examples that are fundamental to what you are trying to get them to understand. You then connect them to the current concept or skill so they can reference and build upon knowledge and always have an entry point.

I ask a couple questions that would allow an assessment of basic conceptual understanding as well as how they feel so they can self-monitor, and assess so they can become more confident and conscious of when they are learning and how much skill or knowledge they have attained.

I incorporate their interests and make sure we work up to the task or skill at hand, so as to minimize frustration and increase confidence and self-efficacy.

I like to use many tools, such as pre-prepped diagrams and mnemonics, as well as IM, audio and video conferencing. I think it is really important that the student does a majority of the talking and writing so they are learning and exercising their skills.
