What is your teaching philosophy?

My philosophy in teaching is there is no such thing as a bad student. Every student has the potential to get high marks. The secret is knowing how to tap into that potential. I am well-versed in multiple techniques in tapping a student's potential.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would get to know the student and talk with them. I would also have them do an initial assessment so I can understand their skill level, and use it as a base to measure their growth.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I would help a student become an independent learner by knowing what they like and how they learn. These two factors help me help the student enjoy their learning.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would first understand what is important to them. Finding a motivation that is more personable helps the student become vested in their education.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, I would first determine what is giving them trouble. It could be a matter of context or logistics, or any other number of reasons. Knowing what is causing the difficulty means you know the resolution.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

The best way to help a student struggling with reading comprehension depends on why the struggle. The most common reason is context. The best way to overcome this type of struggle is to teach the student how to dissect the text.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

One strategy I have found successful when I am starting to work with a student is known as read-think-write-pair share. The two of us will read the text, think about it, write what we thought of, then share and discuss our thoughts.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would help a student get excited about a subject they are struggling in by knowing what their interest are. Then I would tie the subject matter to what mattered to them.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

One technique I use to be sure that a student understands the material is by a formative assessment. I would ask the student to explain back to me in their own words what the material is about.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I build a student's confidence in a subject by making smaller goals that are easier to achieve. As time goes on, the goals become bigger, and so does the student's pride and confidence.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I evaluate a student's needs by talking with them and their parents. I also have them do a base assessment, along with observation while in session. Students will let you know how to teach them. They may not come out and say it, but behaviors are good indicators for what the student needs.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

我适应μ辅导学生的需要ltiple ways. This depends on what is needed. If the child does better by having me verbally repeat the exercise, then I will do it. If the student learns better by first drawing, then I will let them draw first. But the student needs to show these will work, otherwise I will try something different. I will do whatever it takes to get the student to not only learn, but to learn independently.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

The type of materials I typically use depends on what the student needs. Age appropriate novels are a goldmine in tutoring. One of my favorite materials to use is what is known as one page wonders. That is a one page article that students use to increase their skill level.
