Certified Tutor
I completed a BA in Women's Studies/Literature at Brown University and an MFA in English/Creative Writing at Mills College. At Mills, I tutored extensively through the Writing Center. While working with both undergraduate and graduate students on their writing, I also taught English composition and coordinated the activities of the Center. I received excellent student evaluations for both tutoring and teaching.
After leaving Mills, I decided to focus on working as an editor and pursuing my own writing. Working one-on-one with a wide variety of academic, business, and creative writing clients has given me the opportunity to continue developing the skills involved in tutoring. I have provided substantial editing for research grant applications, teaching materials, academic articles published in national journals, and books published by academic presses. I have also written and edited exhibit panels for museums, scripted text for computer interactives, developed brand identity materials, and completed a middle-reader novel to engage kids in environmental conservation.
After years of focusing on editing, I am returning to a focus on teaching and tutoring, because I miss working with students! I am comfortable tutoring all aspects of reading and writing: comprehension of difficult texts, analytical and creative writing, grammar and style. I also love to tutor Spanish, which I learned while living in Bilbao, Spain.
I have a knack for putting students at ease, locating the area of difficulty, and fostering confidence. I have a fun and relaxed style. In my free time I like to write songs and essays, play drums and guitar, ride my bike around town, swim laps, and play with my seven-year-old daughter.

What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe that every person learns differently and that it is always possible to find a style that works well for an individual learner. I start from the knowledge that a student already has, and I build outward from there.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I begin by listening as a student tells me what is going well, what is feeling difficult, and what their biggest concerns are. We work together to get a sense of what would be most helpful, and we find concrete first steps that are satisfying and motivating.
如何帮助一个学生成为一个独立的learner?
Independent learning happens when a student has a concrete game plan that relies on his or her strengths as a learner. I can help a student formulate a realistic plan that builds confidence.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
We are all motivated by reward. I work with students to establish a series of steps that lead to their goals, and we strategize together to come up with the kinds of rewards that will actually help along the way.
