我完全双语,我本地西班牙speaker. I was raised in a Puerto Rican family, and I spent every summer from the age of two years old until the age of fourteen in Puerto Rico with my Spanish-speaking family. My grandmother spoke Spanish as her first language, which required me to learn so that I could communicate with her and my other family members. I have always had a love of my language and culture. I began working with children at the age of 14, and volunteered in schools with special needs children throughout my entire high school career. I began tutoring professionally at the age of 16, and now have over eight years of experience.

In college, I taught Spanish three days a week to middle school children, while tutoring in the evenings and weekends. I took Spanish classes throughout high school and college in order to perfect my writing skills, and in the summer I worked a program called Freedom Schools. In this program we taught the children aged from 7-13 an integrated reading curriculum, while also exploring their creativity through extracurricular activities and field trips. I have always had a passion for working with children of all ages, and teaching as well as tutoring has enabled me to leave a lasting impact on their lives.

In the years that I was developing my skills, I also taught first grade religious education. I believe that time and patience is all that is needed in order to change a student's life for the better. Although I gained majority of my experience teaching children, I have also taught adults, and I have tutored college students in the subject as well. Writing in Spanish while in college always proved to be a difficult task for my peers, and I was always happy to lend a hand in order to help them further understand the language. I enjoy working with others in general, and have always been described as a cheerful and optimistic person. In my spare time I am a full time mom and aunt, and I own a small business that I work from home. I also enjoy music, reading new books and learning new facts. I look forward to growing my experiences through meeting new individuals as well as students in my area.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that each student needs to be approached as an individual. What works for one may not work for the other. There are a variety of methods that can be used to teach. You just have to find which one works.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would typically ask the student where they're having the most issues and tackle their lessons from there.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I often teach my students to break down and translate their work little by little. I teach them to use resources such as dictionaries, notebooks, and note cards to keep track of all that they have learned in order for them to refer to it later.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would most likely offer a small reward system, or incentives such as me bringing them small treats or rewards.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would spend time trying to make it as easy as possible for them. I would also spend more time on that skill, concept, or subject in order to ensure that they were able to grasp it.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I try my best to break down the individual components in order to increase their comprehension.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I have found that flashcards, repetition, as well as writing often help the most.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would relate it to their current life, with music, food, or different cultural aspects.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I often quiz them on their subject matter.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I make sure to praise them often, and to remain patient and optimistic.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

It is as simple as being able to ask the student where they are having issues, and then discuss it with their teachers and parent(s).

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I simply assess where the student seems to be the most responsive and interested.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I typically use a notebook, textbooks, dictionaries, the Internet, videos, and songs. I may also include coloring sheets, arts and crafts, and things of that matter depending on the student and their age.
