Michael

Certified Tutor

I am a 9 year veteran of tutoring, starting as a freshman in High School volunteering to help young students with their homework. I continued in college tutoring the STEM fields for college and high school students., especially Calculus, Basic Computer Science. I also tutored Essay Writing, Creative Writing, Speech in school. I graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College with a Bachelors in Computer Science in May 2014.

My favorite subject to tutor is Spanish. I am recently ending a trip as an ESL language assistant in Seville, Spain. I studied the Spanish language diligently for years to gain fluency and as a non-native speaker. In the process I have learned a number of language "hacks" to really jumpstart learning.

In my spare time I manage a private Investment club, where I educate the members about Financial Literacy and Investing. I also am a creative writer, director, actor and producer of short films. Personal health is also very important to me, I have active lifestyle doing martial arts and other recreational sports like gymnastics and rock climbing, to keep fit.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Break down the sentences into complete thoughts. Summarize the thoughts and repeat. Some sentences can be mind boggling. These times, it can be best to go back to the basics. Look at the basic grammar for understanding.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Ask them where they came from. Most people have a strong ownership to what they call home. I believe it is important to remember where you came from because we all have the potential to go far in this world.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Motivation, is necessary every time we perform a task. I believe motivation is needed daily, and the most effective motivation is intrinsic. Most students want to know why a topic is important. We must let them know!

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Give them the resources they need to do it themselves. Once a student has learned a concept, give them examples to show mastery and resources they can use to do it themselves and teach others.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Usually, I must ask the student questions to find the fallacy of their understanding. Sometimes, a student just needs to hear or do a skill in a different way. It's good to have a variety of teaching methods.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Have them explain it back to me or someone else. Worksheets and online sites are my favorite for sharpening the saw and reinforcing understanding.
