Certified Tutor

I graduated from San Jose State University with degrees in Philosophy/Religious Studies and Physics/Mathematics. Throughout college I tutored various math subjects, physics, and chemistry. After years in the business world I taught math with Denver Public Schools as a Blue Print Math Fellow. I am passionate about learning and helping others. Everyone has a different 'style' of learning so as a coach I need to grasp that and present each subject with a congruent style.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I ask many questions and look for different ways to explain subjects through examples, etc.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Get to know who they are, what their likes and dislikes are, and what their learning styles might be.

你能帮一个学生变得如何e an independent learner?

By learning to ask their own questions and try their best.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Being a good tutor and coach means being enthusiastic, entertaining, and bringing out the best in my students. I help each student find their own motivation and celebrate their victories with them.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I try various approaches to the same content. There is more than one way to get up a mountain.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

To have great reading comprehension, you need to start slowly and address the building blocks of reading: vocabulary, grammar, and context. Then, we practice and build up muscle.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Building rapport is the first step. Once you find a connection, it is easier to approach a subject in a way that makes learning fun and easy for a particular student.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Little successes build into big ones. Start small and celebrate and chart the smallest of improvements. Pretty soon they will be huge.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I ask a lot of questions. I ask the same question in several different ways. To make sure they really understand it they need to "teach it back" to me.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Small successes are the key. They get bigger quickly, and then progress is apparent.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I ask a lot of questions and watch how students approach solving problems.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I change my pace and tone as well as using visual and auditory cues.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Anything that is available for the subject. Typically, I use textbooks, calculators, paper and pencil.
