I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Henry

Certified Tutor

I have been a student tutor since freshman year of my high school, I am currently a sophomore at University of Kansas. I tutored my classmates in the classes I am enrolled in and in the classes that I have already taken. I tutored students in calculus I and II, college algebra, and chemistry. I am currently a student tutor for my school TRIO Supportive Educational Services, and I am going to apply to be either a chemistry or a math teaching assistant. Also I am a student tutor for tutoring websites, and I tutored students from more than 20 classes through them.

I feel great when I can help students understand the problems and help them achieve their goals. I am very thankful that God gave me the ability to think subjects like Calculus and Chemistry to be interesting, so I want help others to see that they can learn a hard course in a fun way. I am very patient when comes to problem explaining, and I would always come up different ways to explain the problem to different students. I love my job.

I have received an A+ in algebra 1 and 2, geometry, precalculus, and both calculus courses. I try to prepare myself every time before I tutor a student, I would do many problems that are related to the subject and I like to come up new ways to teach students to help them engage in the lessons.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Be patient, and have a joyful heart with a positive attitude :D

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Get to know more about the student, ask what life is like in school, and what it is like outside of the school. Understand the student's need. Introduce myself a little. :)

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

After going over the questions students have, I will come up with some questions on my own that are similar to the original questions. Then, I will share my personal experience on how to study.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Instead of making a shortcut that might confuse the student, I usually go a different route to approach the question, usually a longer one, like stairs. I will give examples that are related to the question, from easy to slowly approaching the more difficult questions.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Take more time explaining, be patient, maybe break it down into smaller sections, and do more problems to practice.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Be patient and slow down; take more time to explain the problems (maybe with a different approach too).

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Be more interested in what in the subject we are talking about; I found out that a lot of students are visual learners, so I like to include drawing out what we are talking about a lot of times.
