I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Raka

Certified Tutor

I am a fun and energetic young professional who just graduated from NYU with a major in Urban Design and Sociology. I work at a climate change think tank and love to work with students and help them achieve academic excellence in their spare time. I am passionate about learning in all its forms, but most of my areas of expertise are centered in math, science, and humanities. While my studies as an undergraduate student ranges from architectural drawing to Marxist thinking, my tutoring interests are much more broad. I have always done quite well on standardized tests and love helping people prepare for them! I also enjoy tutoring science, math reading, writing, literature and related fields at all levels! Additionally, I have great French skills and am more than comfortable tutoring elementary to intermediate French. I also studied Italian in college and lived in Italy for 6 months, so beginner Italian is also possible for me to help with. In high school, I completed the International Baccalaureate Program along with many Advanced Placement exams. Working with students to achieve success in these areas is also something that I love to do.

What is your teaching philosophy?

My tutoring philosophy is that everyone, whether they are young or old, whether they have learning difficulties or they do not, has a completely unique way of learning, and I excel at helping them find that way. No way is better or worse or makes someone more or less intelligent. I am a firm believer that "whatever works, works." Listen to music or don't; handwrite your notes or type them up. The only correct solution is the one that helps you learn the material in the fastest amount of time with the most minimal amount of stress. We will figure out what works best for you.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a first session with students, I might go through their frustrations and see how I can help them find their least stressful study patterns.
