Certified Tutor

I am currently a High School Chemistry Teacher who got his degree in Mathematics with a minor in Chemical Engineering. I am passionate about the Stem Subjects and helping people learn. In my free time I like to read and play basketball. I also enjoy playing video games and I just started to do Crossfit which I am enjoying a lot. This past summer I worked with the Tucson Big Brothers Big Sisters picking up donations from all over the area.

My teaching style is one that I like to think is extremely adaptable. Every student is different and so are their learning styles and preferences. My goal is to make the subject I am tutoring not only easier but fun. Math is my favorite subject in school and I know that it is an extremely intimidating subject for many students. My method of breaking down problems into their bare elements and working from there helps prevent students from shutting down because they have no idea what to do when they see a new problem.

While I am here to help students do better in their classes I am also here as a mentor for schooling in general. I am always willing to help out with students who need more help outside of their classes. If there is a non-academic issue that arises while tutoring I will always do my best to help the student through because I believe that if the student is distracted he will not be able to focus on studying and their grades will suffer.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that each student has a different best way to learn. The trick is to individualize each lesson based on the student's needs. I like to find where they are struggling and focus on that one particular subject because in most subjects if you don't know the early stuff, you won't understand the more difficult stuff later on.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would get to know the student and find out where they are struggling more and focus on that. Also, I would try a few different teaching techniques and see which one is the most effective.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Each subject has a different best way to study for it. The goal is to help the student learn the best way for them to learn that subject, and then help them learn to do that on their own time.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

A student who has lost motivation has most of the time lost perspective or is struggling with a subject and has given up. I would help that student get through the subject and make it easier in their mind, which would help their discouragement.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would break it down into smaller bits and give them a few practice problems that would help build up the skills necessary to do more complicated problems.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Taking things step by step is one of the most efficient things I've done to help with students having problems. Usually, the student is intimidated by the multiple steps required to solve the problem.

你将如何帮助学生获得兴奋/ w订婚吗ith a subject that they are struggling in?

Being excited myself will help the student get excited.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

You start with easy problems, and once they can do those with no problem, then you slowly make them harder and harder until they can do them with no problem.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

You give them a few practice problems and see where they are struggling, and then work with them on those parts specifically.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I have multiple different techniques. I would just alter which technique I was using to fit that specific student's needs.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I usually use their books or lessons from class, and I alter the problems to give them more examples and help them understand the material.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I start by showing an example problem and then have them attempt to do a similar problem. If they don't understand the problem, then I break it down into simpler problems and help them understand the method used.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

The only reading comprehension I would run into would be for word problems.

I would help show them how to break each word problem into a problem with numbers and variables. It just takes practice.
