Tim

Certified Tutor

I graduated from Baldwin Wallace University with a Bachelor of Arts with a focus in Sport Management, Economics and Business Management. While in college I worked through our learning center as a tutor for a year and a half tutoring economics. I am have focused on tutoring economics (micro and macro), business, statistics and math. My favorite subject to tutor is economics because I feel I can make economics relatable to the students. I describe my tutoring style as such: I expect the student to take on most of the problem themselves. When the student struggles, I will step in and help the student figure out the solution through questions and explanations on my end. Outside of tutoring I enjoy bowling, going to trivia nights, playing pool and golfing. I believe everyday we should strive to learn something new. When we strive to learn something new we are not only better ourselves but better the world around us.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I strive to make the subject relatable to the student's interests. When the student can relate to a topic, I find they are more likely to remember how to solve the problem.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Get to know their interests to make the topics we are working on more relatable.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Break down the skill or concept in small pieces until the student understands one piece. Then continue to build on what the student understands until they understand the entire concept.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

When possible, make the topic relatable to the student.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I will connect the topic to something that they are interested in to show them how the two fit together.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I will ask the student a question based on the explanations they were given by their teacher, book and myself to ensure they understand the material. If they don't understand the material, I ask further questions about what exactly they don't understand.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I build a student's confidence by pointing out what they are getting right within the subject.
