I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Brendan

Certified Tutor

I graduated from Southern Connecticut State University in May 2011 with a Bachelor of Arts in History. While in school, I frequently engaged in collaborative work with other students. Since that time I have tutored in remedial English at Housatonic Community College and have worked with teenagers and young adults on the autism spectrum to improve their social and critical thinking skills. My greatest tutoring interests are history especially East Asian history, geography, writing, and literature, all multifaceted subjects which lend themselves to open discussion. I consider dialog between the tutor and student essential as my experience has been that students who actively engage make much larger and more rapid improvement. Besides simply memorizing facts, I find that in-depth discussion of historical figures, characters, and places generates a greater interest in the topic area and in turn leads to more engaging and productive sessions. When I have free time I extensively read, primarily non-fiction but with regular forays into different genres of fiction; regularly edit Wikipedia, where I am an administrator; play my electric bass, mostly to rock music; and passionately follow the New York Yankees, Green Bay Packers, and both the UConn Men's and Women's basketball programs.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Besides the bare essentials, I also enjoy exploring the more unusual aspects of history and writing so that students have a more diverse experience and are more prepared upon encountering something unexpected.
