I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

My first formal teaching experience occurred when, at the age of nine, I volunteered to help first graders practice their arithmetic skills. Since then, I have worked as a geology TA, a substitute teacher, and a summer camp field teacher. I have also taught math, science, art, and French at weekend and summer enrichment programs for children. I love teaching because, not only do I believe in the importance of developing one's thinking skills, analytical abilities, and knowledge base, which makes this work meaningful to me, but I also love helping others discover the joy of learning.

My primary teaching interest is in math and science, subjects in which I have had a lifelong interest. I hold a BA in geology from Amherst College and an MS in Crop and Soil Sciences from Michigan State University. I competed on my high school's math teams for four years and had the honor of being selected twice for the Maine state all-star math team. However, I also have a strong interest in languages as well as English literature. I have studied French, Latin, German, and Mandarin Chinese.

My non-academic interests include knitting, playing with my dogs, volunteering in my community, and watching old episodes of "Doctor Who." I am an avid contra dancer. I also love to read books in a wide variety of genres. My favorites include "Pride and Prejudice," the short stories of Nikolai Gogol, the Harry Potter series, "The Handmaid's Tale, "Brave New World," "The Fault in our Stars," Shakespeare's collected works, and "Jane Eyre."
