I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I am a recent graduate of Northwestern University, where I received a B.A. in Sociology and Legal Studies and wrote a senior thesis on race and legal consciousness in film. Since graduation I have worked as a research assistant at the American Bar Foundation, served as a private editing consultant for start-ups needing assistance with their business proposals and a writing coach for high schoolers and undergraduates working on admissions essays, and tutored high school equestrians and other world-class athletes through a private tutoring company.

It is most important that students learn to self-express verbally and via writing. So, whether I am tutoring AP English Language, Modern World History, 6th Grade Language Arts, Psychology, ACT or SSAT prep, or any of the other Humanities subjects I cover, my students will develop a working vocabulary and the writing skills to demonstrate the extent of their knowledge. Effective expression translates to professional success and emotional maturity no matter the paths their lives take, so it is one of my biggest priorities. Another must in my tutoring approach is customizing curriculum. Students should feel entitled to an exceptional education, and I want to help them find ways to make their school experiences always work for them. Practically, this means anything from devising effective study habits for a student with a packed schedule to learning how to organize an essay with color-coded note-cards for an extremely visual learner.

Finally, I love the collaborative, communal nature of successful private tutoring, as parents, tutors, regular teachers, and other members of a student's support system come together to ensure the student's academic and personal needs are met. To learn more about this process and to build upon the assistance I can offer students, I will be a Master of Social Work (A.M.) candidate at The University of Chicago, starting in September 2014. When I am not with a student or prepping for a tutorial during my full-time weekday and weekend availability, I am practicing kripalu yoga, taking photos with my new Polaroid Instant camera, or spending time with my four-year-old brother.
