I graduated from Cornell University with a degree in Environmental Science and Economics. I tutored throughout college, providing assistance to students on anything from essay-writing to understanding sustainability initiatives such as composting and energy conservation. I was lucky enough to have encountered incredible teachers throughout my education, and intend to provide the same care and attention to each of my students. I am passionate and creative, and will work hard to find out how each student learns and how to best help each student understand the material they are having trouble with. Each student deserves the opportunity to feel successful, and I will work with the students and their parents to best achieve their goals.

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

My philosophy is that each student deserves a learning experience that is tailored to their goals and learning style. I think it is important to apply materials learned in the classroom to the real world to bring perspective and curiosity into the learning experience. Most of all, both student and teacher should stay optimistic, and learning should be fun!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I ask questions to determine exactly what the student is having trouble with and to get an idea of the student's learning style. After the first session is over, I think of other examples that can help the student work on things they had trouble on, and I will introduce them at the next session.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By asking questions. A student will not learn if the teacher always tells them the answer. I will help students become independent learners by asking directed questions to help them figure out the answer on their own. Also, by providing real-world examples, I will help a student begin to ask questions about the world around them and connect them to their learning experience.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

By staying positive! Positivity is key in any learning setting. There is always a different angle to teaching a topic, and I will help the student find the right one that helps them understand the topic best.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would try to teach the skill or concept in a different way. For example, instead of reading from a textbook, maybe working through an example or breaking down the skill into parts with a diagram or flow chart will be more beneficial.
