Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
Varsity Tutors is the only resource you need if you're looking for AP Biology tutors. AP Biology is a part of the Advanced Placement program, which allows high school students to take college-level classes with the possibility of earning college credit if they do well enough on the exam taken toward the end of the school year. All AP Exams are scored on a simple scale from 1-5, so it's pretty easy to look up what score you need in order to qualify for college credit at each of the institutions of higher learning you or your student are looking into. Bear in mind that your target score may change based on your intended major.
What topics can AP Biology tutors review with me?
We can help you find a private instructor for every topic that you will encounter in your AP Biology syllabus. The class covers a variety of scientific subject matters, with special emphasis on how evolution is responsible for both the diversity and unity of life; how biological systems use molecular building blocks and free energy to grow, reproduce, and maintain dynamic homeostasis; how living systems store, retrieve, transmit, and respond to information essential to carrying out life processes; and how biological systems interact with one another. A lot of topics are explored in detail in order to cover these central foci, including active transport at the cellular level, cell organelles and their functions, introductory genetics, natural selection, and photosynthesis.
Rote memorization is an important consideration in AP Biology, but it isn't the only one. Students are also expected to know how to approach problems scientifically, design experiments to test hypotheses, collect reliable data, and interpret that data in a logical manner. Furthermore, the course assesses a student's written communication skills by evaluating how effectively they can share their findings with others. Finally, students must be able to construct accurate models that illustrate core biologic processes at work.
Studying with an AP Biology tutor allows you to receive personalized attention in a one-on-one learning environment. Your instructor can take the time to understand your preferred learning style and then design sessions around it to enhance your study efficiency. For example, a visual learner might use graphics to illustrate the functions of each cell organelle, while a more auditory learner might get more out of a lecture-based session format. If you're a kinesthetic learner who learns best by doing, your instructor can walk you through an entire experiment to illustrate key concepts. For instance, examining different types of cells under a microscope can really help you understand the differences between them.
Working with a private instructor also allows you to learn at a pace you find comfortable. If you understand how DNA and RNA store the genetic material necessary for a cell's survival, your instructor can concentrate on other topics to improve your study efficiency. If you're having a harder time with the microbiology behind photosynthesis, your instructor can look for new ways to explain it to you and help you achieve a deeper understanding.
You are also your AP Biology tutor's sole student during your study sessions, ensuring that any questions you have can be addressed in a timely manner. Similarly, all of the work you complete can receive prompt feedback, making it easier to identify your academic strengths and any areas of opportunity you could benefit from studying further.
Your instructor can also show you study skills that you can use in AP Biology and beyond. For example, you probably have a dense textbook that your classroom teacher assigns periodic readings from. If you could retain more of what you read, you might benefit from going over active reading techniques such as note-taking to help you get more out of it. You can also write down any questions you have for your AP Biology tutor, ensuring that you remember to ask when the opportunity arises.
Since writing is a component of AP Biology, it may also behoove you to take your outlining skills out of English and social studies and into science. Working from an outline makes it easier to create a logical piece of writing, allowing readers to easily follow your ideas. An outline also represents your plan of attack, so you don't get stuck staring at your booklet trying to remember what you wanted to say next. The AP Bio exam is timed, so you really can't afford to sit at your desk doing nothing while the seconds tick away on exam day.
AP Biology also involves some math, so your private instructor may provide practice questions if your quantitative problem-solving skills are lacking. You also need to understand how math illustrates scientific concepts for certain topics on the exam. Thus, your mathematical knowledge must be theoretical as well as practical.
Can AP Biology tutors help me prepare for the end-of-year AP Biology Exam?
The AP Biology Exam consists of a total of two sections, conveniently called Section I and Section II. Each section is further subdivided into two distinct question types. For example, the first part of Section I consists of 63 multiple-choice questions, including standalone items and questions in sets. Multiple-choice questions tend to be good for students, as you can eliminate obviously incorrect answer choices and try to deduce a correct response whenever you're unsure of an answer. The information contained in one question may also help you answer another, so keep your eyes peeled for opportunities to leverage the exam against itself.
The next part of Section I contains six standalone "grid-in" questions where you need to incorporate mathematics in order to find the right answer. If you aren't familiar with how grid-in items work, you can complete sample problems during your AP Biology tutoring sessions to gain some experience with the format. You have a total of 90 minutes to complete both portions of Section I.
Section II of the AP Bio Exam puts your writing skills to the test. First, you need to answer two long-form essay questions, at least one of which will involve experimental data or a lab of some kind. It might seem rudimentary, but if you use the scientific method as a means of illustrating your thought processes, you'll probably hit everything that the exam expects you to. If you aren't in the habit of writing essays for science, you might consider treating the second item as an essay for another class. You're simply telling the story of living systems instead of historical figures or characters in a novel.
The second part of Section II consists of six short answers that require paragraph-length arguments or responses. You only have 90 minutes to complete both aspects of Section II, so make sure to work quickly enough to allow time to proofread all of your responses.
Many students also take practice exams under realistic test-taking conditions during AP Biology tutoring sessions. Experiencing what those 90 minutes feel like for yourself can prove tremendously beneficial when you're trying to budget your time on exam day. Similarly, learning how the AP Biology Exam words things can help you identify tricky questions for what they are and respond appropriately. Perhaps most importantly, reviewing the results of practice tests can help you and your instructor pinpoint what future study sessions should cover and which areas you are more comfortable with.
How can Varsity Tutors help me connect with AP Bio tutors?
AP Biology is challenging, going well beyond what your average biology tutor is comfortable teaching. If you were to try to find your own private instructor, you would need to go through the hassle of verifying that they understand college-level concepts, remain up-to-date in their knowledge of the exam, and have the scheduling flexibility to meet your needs. In contrast, we can match you with a knowledgeable AP Biology instructor in as little as 24 hours. They will know both their science and the mechanics of the exam, equipping them to help you in any way possible.
We also offer an exclusive Live Learning Platform, proprietary software that facilitates face-to-face study sessions over the internet for maximal convenience. You read that right - you can benefit from private instruction without the logistical nightmare of trying to arrange an in-person meeting. Our platform also has powerful features such as a virtual whiteboard and video chat functionality so that you don't need to compromise your study efficiency for convenience sake.
You are also in complete control of when every session takes place, allowing your high-stakes test prep to run on your schedule instead of the other way around. If you are only available to study on the weekends, all of your sessions can take place on the weekend. If you would prefer to study on weekday evenings, that request can be accommodated as well.
Varsity Tutors can set you up with professional AP Biology tutoring today, but the first move is yours. Use the information provided on this page to speak with a knowledgeable Educational Consultant and learn more about the benefits of private tutoring services today!
